Ning: Adding an Image to a Blog Post

When you include an image in a Ning blog post, you have two choices.
  • Option 1: Image online. If the image is online and is already a good size (not more than 600 pixels in width), you can go with Option 1, using the online version of the image.
  • Option 2: Upload the image. If the image is an image only on your computer and not already online, or if the image is too large, or if you run into some kind of problem with Option 1, you can go with Option 2, uploading the image.
After you have inserted the image, make sure you include Image Information at the bottom of the post, so that people can learn more about the image you are using.

Here is how the each option works:

Option 1: Image online. In order to include the online image in your blog post, you need the address of the image online. Just right mouse-click on the image, and select "Copy Image Location" to get the address of the image.

If you want to double-check on the image's size, you can right-mouse click on the image and choose "Properties" (instead of "Copy Image Location"):

After you click "Properties," you will be able to get specific information about the size of the image, and you can also highlight and copy the image's location from this screen:

Then, using the image location, you can insert the image into your Ning blog post. Just position the cursor where you want the image to appear, and click on the Image icon. This will cause a window to open up, where you will paste in the image address.

Make sure you include the http: part of the address. You will then see the HTML code inserted into your blog post. If you want to change the alignment of the image, just type "center" where you see the word "left" in the HTML code.

To check and make sure the image is displaying correctly, use the Preview button at the bottom of the screen.

Option 2: Upload the image. If for some reason Option 1 will not work (image is not already online, image online is too large, etc.), you will need to upload the image from your computer. If you do not already have the image on your computer, right-mouse click on the image and save the image file to your computer desktop. Then, position your cursor where you want the image in your blog post, and click on the Image icon. A window will pop up that will allow you to upload the file from your computer.

You can click on the Options in order to generate a smaller version of the image if it is too large (400 pixels is a good size), and you can also choose to have a full-size version of the window open in a separate window.

When you are done choosing your options, click the Add button. The HTML code that will be inserted is more elaborate, but if you look carefully, you still have the option to type "center" where you see the word "left" if you want to center the image.

IMPORTANT: Image Information. When you add images to your posts, make sure you also remember to include Image Information: that is, a caption for the image (a title, or something other description of the image), along with a link to the webpage where you found the image (not a link to the image file, and not a link to an image search - you need to link to an actual webpage). For example, here is the Image Information for the image of Ganga used in this post:

Image Information:
River Goddess Ganga on Her Fish Mount. Web Source.
